PETALING JAYA: SEA Games chef de mission Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin hopes the traditional boat race-kayak team will make full use of the opportunities accorded to make the nation proud at the upcoming Philippines Games from Nov 30-Dec 11.
The rowers left yesterday for Zhaoqing, China, for an 18-day training stint where they will train under Lyu Changson. Changson was formerly the national coach for China.
The stint was made possible with the help and support from Datuk Seri Dr K.K. Chai, who is the founder and group executive chairman of KK Group of Companies.
“Their participation in the Games was still hanging at one point but we fought for their inclusion. I hope the athletes do not give up the fight easily.
“They must have strong self-belief as it is they themselves who will determine whether they can be the champions,” said Megat during the flag-handing ceremony.
Team manager Datuk Michael Wong said Malaysia will take part in six events in the traditional boat race at the Games.
“We hope to get some medals. We will have a better picture of our strength after the training stint.”
